About Our Teas

For over 20 years we have been passionate about connecting people to the magic spirit and power of the earth’s plants Algonquin Tea Company is a collective of dedicated Earth lovers who had a vision of sharing the magical, medicinal, wild and sacred plants of the Canadian wilderness where we live.

Organic matters as does the wilderness, so our herbs are sustainably harvested and or certified organically grown, hand-picked and naturally dried.

No fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides are used in or near where our herbs are grown or picked.

Our Name “Al-gone-kwin”

We were inspired by childhood canoe camping trips into the thousands of lakes of Algonquin Park, and in honour of the Algonquin/Omàmiwinini people who have always called this beautiful un-ceded territory home.

The Artist

The images are by friend and artist Ritchie ‘Stardreamer’ Sinclair who apprenticed with Norval Morrisseau, who is considered a master painter and a Canadian treasure.

A Blessing

Algonquin Spiritual Elder Grandfather William Commanda enjoyed Sacred Blend tea and would say with a smile “that’s really good tea.” In his generosity, he offered this quote to put into the tea boxes: “We must come together with one heart, one mind, and one determination, and respect mother earth.”

The plants here have strong wild spirits and when you harvest them, they speak to you. Some are more chatty than others. Nature guided my first partner with stories and visions about which herbs to blend together. We put tobacco down to say thanks, in the way of the original peoples here, and will not harvest if the plants do not want it. When wild harvesting we only harvest one year’s growth and only two-fiths of that growth and do not return for two years. We graze like deer when harvesting.

Plants and this land have been sung to for generations from those who are from this land, and now each of us need to learn again to sing songs of thanks, the way all our ancestors have done. It reconnects us like a tree spreading deep tap roots, and ‘turns on’ dormant knowing. It is a returning home, to sink your feet, hands and heart into the earth….. and listen to a great telling of our own remembering.

Sharing the Love

Algonquin Tea donates to www.natureconservancy.ca and to www.ecojustice.ca (in honour of our dear friend Skye Faris, social justice and peace activist 1940–2014), and the Council of Canadians, fighting for clean water.
